An Alsatian Weekend

Hamilton in France students had a weekend excursion to Alsace in November. Located in Eastern France, and close to the German border, the Alsatian region offered students the richness of its history and the pleasures of its gastronomy. Our first stop was in Strasbourg, where we spent two days. We walked through the city with … Continue reading An Alsatian Weekend

"Au début, je me souviens, il était très difficile pour moi de communiquer avec les autres personnes dans la rue, lors d'événements sociaux ou avec ma mère d'accueil, mais tout a changé avec le temps ! J'aime avoir des conversations sur la politique, la religion, l'art ou d'autres sujets très intéressants tous les jours avec ma mère d'accueil pendant le dîner (apparemment, c'est une chose très française à faire)."
– Joaquin Pacheco '23, Hamilton College

"A course schedule that combines art history and cinema as well as literature, allows me to gain multidisciplinary connaissance. I am able to study a form, a movement, a school of belief through multitude of iterations and proliferations in disparate spheres. Paris is like a living catalogue, waiting for people to rustle through its pages."
– Taicheng Jin '22, Hamilton College

"My professor really enjoyed having 'native speakers' in the class while we read In Cold Blood. We found many discrepancies between the English text and the French translation. [...] This course was one of my favorite of the semester, and I cannot quantify how much my French improved after being in this class."
– Rosie Kilcoyne '21, Colby College

"The 'Économie Descriptive' course allowed me to study economics through the French perspective and understand the main structural and institutional differences with the United States."
- Mateo Fiorentino '20, Williams College

My favorite part of the internship at the Secours Populaire was the two weeks I spent at Rue Montcalm, theirfood pantry. In the morning I stocked shelves in the basement, where they keep meticuloustrack of every single food/toiletry item they have. [...] They provide lunch thereand everyone eats together in the kitchen, which was a really wholesome and uniquely Frenchexperience. In the afternoons they open for business, and I helped hand out a full shoppingcart’s worth of products to everyone who came through."
- Mercedes Girona '20, Hamilton College

"The cafes in Paris are places that you are able to — and expected to — sit and talk for hours. [...] The Parisians were not ashamed of, and didn’t deprive themselves of, an opportunity to be social. There is a clear divide between work and play. I too was happy to engage in carving time out of my day to unwind with a coffee and talk to my friends as the sun set behind different scenery than the day before."
– Alexander Burns '21, Bowdoin College

"I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that my 'Emancipation of Women' class covered not only French literature and art, but also one of my favorite topics, women in science. We read about the history of women in medicine, including Marie Curie, who lived in Paris. When my professor presented us with an open- ended final project for the class, I chose to research and write about Marie Curie."
- Kate Gannon '20, Colby College

"Beginning that September night, I made a conscious effort to bring my camera along on excursions rather than rely on my iPhone where texts from friends and family in the US were a strong source of temptation counter to the cultural immersion the Hamilton language pledge enforces. When I developed my photos after returning to the US, I was brought back to so many incredible Paris memories."
–Margaret Werner '21, Amherst College
